ResiCare: Towards a more Sustainable Future with Non Toxic Resins

Toxicity is a rising concern in the industry. Whilst it has been managed over the years in manufacturing, there is an ever growing pressure to reduce and even eliminate altogether any Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) on the factory floor as well as in products.

Rising to the occasion, ResiCare, a part of Michelin Group, has developed nontoxic, resorcinol & formol (RF) free resin with the purpose of contributing to sustainable tires for a safer environment. The company markets high-performance resins made without formaldehyde, isocyanate or resorcinol to meet their clients’ requirements for their own products with a minimum impact on their processes.

Whilst the company was born with a strong DNA from the tire and rubber industry, it has now expanded into other sectors. “We take note of all the industrial and environmental constraints of our customers to deliver the most appropriate, custom-made resin adapted to their needs and their specific applications,” says Aymeric Denoeud, COO at ResiCare. The team of experts at ResiCare adopts a synergic approach to every project that includes a thorough study of the client’s needs and production environment. Once they attain a complete overview of their client’s distinct objectives, the team draws from a broad expertise in adhesion to adjust their formulae to create the ideal resin that meets the specifications of a particular customer.

Specifically in the world of rubber and textile reinforcements, the company has developed its technology over 15 years to deliver a plug & play solution for the tire industry. The technology has now been tested in Europe, APAC and America and it is already available in several factories around the world. In fact the company passed the milestone of 2 millions tires produced with its RF free resins.

Uniquely, the company has also started helping clients manufacture their customized resins in-situ.

To that end, ResiCare has developed a data-driven skid machine (a compact and mobile resin production unit) with the latest technologies that the company installs in their clients’ facilities for authorizing them to master resin production according to their requirements. By having this tool on the factory floor, clients are able to produce a fresh batch of resins before initiating the manufacturing process for their products – such as textile reinforcement in tires or belts - while simultaneously monitoring their quality. Currently the skid technology is available in several countries.

The ambition of the company goes further than that and up to monomers that go into its formulae. In fact ResiCare has actively signed up for the BioImpulse Project that brings together multiple French high tech entities from the public and private sectors to develop and industrialize a biobased molecule of interest within a span of six years. Green-lit in 2019, it aims to create a new range of biobased & non-toxic adhesive resins without any of the Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). The project is also due to explore other industrial applications, especially outside the confines of the automotive market.

In this regard, ResiCare has already developed other adhesive resins dedicated to industrial applications ‘beyond the tire’, such as belts and plywood. The company has collaborated with Allin, a French specialist in the production of plywood panels, to market “R’PLY”, a new range of eco-responsible plywood mechanically and moisture resistance, hence kinder to both the health and the environment. It is already available in certain DIY superstores. This sustainable plywood is particularly suited for use in vehicle and boat construction as well as in the construction industry.

Lastly, as ResiCare sets sights on its roadmap, they intend to leverage over a decade of experience and the approval of over 40 patents to release a line of innovative products in the market. The company will also continue to diligently work on the BioImpulse Project to lead the world towards a bio-sourced future that will reduce the application of fossil-based raw materials. “Further down the line, we want to ensure our unique solutions have a wider impact in several fields outside the tire and rubber industry, and help companies create a safer industrial environment for the future generations,” affirms Adrien Paliard, Head of Sales.
