In today’s rapidly evolving industrial landscape, staying ahead of the curve demands vision, high performance and perpetual adaptability. ColgatePalmolive, a 200+-year-old global leader in consumer products, is familiar with the challenges associated with continuous evolution and innovation. As industries grow increasingly complex, how does a company with facilities in over 80 countries embrace these challenges and foster a unified culture of innovation and improvement?
With the advent of technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence, and granular data analytics, Colgate-Palmolive has had to anticipate and adapt to consumer trends, commercial opportunities and a multitude of risks and threats. However, integrating new technologies, updating processes and upskilling the workforce while maintaining productivity is an essential balance.
To complicate matters, the industrial sector is subject to ever-changing ethics, scientific standards, manufacturing practices, and consumer law regulations. Ensuring that employees are wellversed in compliance protocols, safety regulations, and sustainable environmental policies is crucial to maintaining operational integrity.
To pick one example, the company 2025 sustainability and social impact strategy is based on three key ambitions:
• Driving Social Impact: supporting the well-being of people and their pets, building an equitable and inclusive culture, and creating meaningful opportunities for people to succeed inside and outside of Colgate.
• Helping Millions of Homes: empowering people to develop healthier habits by choosing sustainable products that improve their lives and homes, from oral and personal care to pet nutrition and home care.
• Preserving the Environment: accelerating action on climate change and reducing the company’s environmental footprint, working with partners and operations to eliminate waste, decrease plastic usage, save water and conserve natural resources.
To assess Colgate’s sustainability performance, they developed a framework to help gauge progress, starting with a Sustainability Impact Assessment. For this, the company examined an expansive number of internal and external sources on sustainability practices, from global authorities such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) rating tools such as S&P Global, peer-reviewed scientific research, industry reports, consumer insights data, and feedback from more than 8,000 employees in over 100 countries.
"With the advent of technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence, and granular data analytics, Colgate-Palmolive has had to anticipate and adapt to consumer trends, commercial opportunities and a multitude of risks and threats."
The in-depth research provided a solid foundation from which to create specific goals under the umbrella of their 2025 Sustainability & Social Impact Strategy, encompassing a comprehensive spectrum of interrelated topics - economic performance, materials, energy, water, emissions, effluents and waste, products and services, compliance, transport, environmental health and safety, training and education, diversity and equal opportunity, local communities, public policy and service labelling.
Some heavy-hitting targets include removing one-third of plastics and moving to 100% recyclable, reusable, or compostable plastic packaging by 2025; achieving 100% TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) waste certification for global operations and building 100% of new manufacturing sites LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified by 2025; and sourcing 100% renewable electricity for global operations by 2030 while achieving Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2040. Today, Colgate has more TRUE-certified facilities than any other company and continues on its sustainability journey with determination.
Colgate regards sustainability as a strategic global objective that has a physical impact on the natural environment and a social impact on communities and future generations. A robust and far-reaching sustainability strategy provides an opportunity to drive innovation and growth, demonstrate its commitment to responsible business practices, and strengthen its longstanding reputation as one of the world’s most ethical companies.
Transforming practices relies on embedding knowledge and process improvements throughout its diverse workforce, so Colgate-Palmolive has adopted a personalised training approach, tailoring programs to roles and skill levels. The company identifies specific training needs within different departments and ensures that employees receive relevant and targeted education.
Identifying skill gaps is integral to ColgatePalmolive’s workforce strategy. It informs the development of targeted training initiatives, ensuring that employees are equipped with the skills necessary to excel in their roles and support company strategy.
Colgate-Palmolive’s approach to overcoming challenges to industrial innovation and improvement serves as a testament to the company’s commitment to workforce development, cultural identity and operational excellence. By embracing technology, fostering inclusivity, and prioritising continuous learning, the organisation has positioned itself at the forefront of the industry. The journey has not been without its obstacles, but by addressing these challenges head-on and implementing innovative solutions, Colgate-Palmolive has created a strong visionary framework that not only meets the needs of its employees but also propels the company toward a future of sustained success and ethically sustainable growth.
