Fremont, CA: Many machine shops use a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) for quality control of CNC machined parts. CMM ensures that the geometry and dimensions of a finished piece match the original design so that the customer does not get a defective part. It can recognize even the tiniest errors, enabling the machinist to rework on the faulty part.
Although CMM inspection provides security for the customer, it does not allow high-level productivity for the machinist because finding errors are machining would mean it is too late to recover the cost.
Machine tool probing systems are devices fitted to the CNC machine and used to set up parts and measure dimensions during and right after the machining process. On-machine inspection with this system can be a solution to precision machining.

Before machining, a probe can find the workpiece, determine the part location and rotation. It can realign the cutting tool and update offsets in reaction to changes in temperature, during machining. And can perform mold-specific tasks such as checking and verifying electrode condition before the part leaves the CNC machine. Each of these functions increases the accuracy of mold production and consequently, the quality of moldings.
The use of on-machine inspection can improve the quality, repeatability, and accuracy of machined molds while helping manage and tackle variations caused by a temperature change that can lead to features outside the desired tolerance.

On-machine inspections are essential in all CNC machining situations, but probe systems are crucial when precision machining features on a cast or forged parts. Machining on forged or cast components tends to produce minor variations between units. This is why the CNC machine, with the assistance of a probe system, is vital to calibrate properly with each slightly different parts.
The on-machine inspection system provides accuracy as a secondary process when machining and is beneficial for parts made with pressure die casting and investment casting.
