Lean manufacturing is a production philosophy that aims to maximize efficiency while reducing waste. The lean concept defines waste as anything that does not bring value to the customers.
FREMONT, CA: The fundamental principle of lean manufacturing is to eliminate waste to improve a process continuously. Lean manufacturing adds value to the customer sustainably by reducing waste and delivering process improvements. Processes, activities, products, or services that require time, money, or skills but do not add value to the customer are considered waste. These could include underutilized talent, excess inventory, inefficient or wasteful processes, and procedures. Eliminating inefficiencies should streamline services, reduce costs, and ultimately provide savings to the customer for a specific product or service via the supply chain.

Consider five standard lean manufacturing tools and techniques that can assist manufacturers in reducing waste and increasing production.
Kaizen: "Kaizen" is a Japanese term that translates as "improvement." Kaizen is based on the concept of continuous improvement. It encourages teams to collaborate to improve the manufacturing process incrementally. There is always room for improvement in kaizen, and employees should constantly look for ways to improve the workplace.
Additionally, this philosophy emphasizes the importance of each individual's ideas and the importance of all employees participating in improving the company. A kaizen-oriented organization embraces and never criticizes suggestions for improvement at all levels. This contributes to developing an atmosphere of mutual respect and open communication.
5S (The 5S System): The 5S system is a method of organizing derived from five Japanese terms: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke. These terms refer to organization, tidiness, cleanliness, standardization, and sustainability. They culminate in a five-step process designed to eliminate waste and boost productivity and efficiency.
Six Big Losses: Almost any manufacturing category's inefficiency can typically be traced to six universally occurring loss categories. The Six Big Losses include breakdowns, setup and adjustments, minor stops, reduced speed, and startup rejects. The Six Big Losses approach provides a framework for addressing the most prevalent waste sources in manufacturing processes.
Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE): OEE establishes a framework for calculating the loss of productivity in a given manufacturing process. Losses are classified into three categories: downtime, slow cycles, and rejects. This is a baseline and enables tracking progress toward waste elimination in a manufacturing process. At the outset, aiming for an OEE of 85 percent is a reasonable target. Once accomplished, manufacturers can concentrate on additional strategies for improving results.
Machine monitoring: Machine monitoring is a natural fit with OEE. Machine monitoring software collects data from machines automatically. It uses it to provide operators and management with real-time visualizations and notifications and historical analytics to assist them in making faster and more informed decisions. Besides providing a snapshot of machine-by-machine performance, machine monitoring offers a window into the entire manufacturing process. Additionally, if manufacturers utilize secure, cloud-based manufacturing software, they’ll have access to information from any location with an internet connection. Automatic or manual classification of machine downtime, quality issues, and poor performance is possible. Being receptive is critical to developing a genuinely lean manufacturing process. Through experimentation, manufacturers may discover that a combination of lean techniques produces the best result.
