As a leading electronics maker, the designation allows the organization to satisfy the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) demands while retaining its contribution to the local community and defending American security interests. Calumet now meets a critical need for DoD contractors that are expected to work with HUBZone certified firms. Calumet’s specialized and extremely durable circuit boards will help DoD supply chain companies satisfy the federal government’s HUBZone specifications.Calumet’s small rural community in Michigan benefits from the credential because it encourages DoD businesses to continue funding vital work.
“Calumet gives the DoD peace of mind that the high-quality PCBs they require are made in America,” said Todd Brassard, VP/COO, Calumet. “Our performance already attracts top DoD and industry OEMs to Calumet. As America’s only industry-leading PCB supplier to earn the certification, we hope this will further encourage OEMs in the DoD supply chain to take advantage of our distinction and join our efforts to keep electronic manufacturing strong in America.”
Calumet satisfies two of the HUBZone’s most important conditions. It is 100 percent American-owned, and well over 35 percent of its staff reside in a Historically Underutilized Business Zone. When competing for government contracts, small firms are often at a disadvantage. The HUBZone initiative, run by the Small Business Administration, aims to grant at least three percent of federal contract dollars to HUBZone-certified businesses each year. Calumet’s dedication to ensuring long-term jobs and resources for workers to evolve and improve is being validated as HUBZones extends to more remote areas.
“Calumet is all about growing to support our community,” said Brassard. “We are the namesake of our community and couldn’t imagine growing anywhere else. As 80 percent of electronics manufacturing is offshored, the HUBZone certification further solidifies our position as leaders in the American electronics industry and will help us exceed the expectations and demands of the DoD.”
In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the manufacturer hires over 300 full-time residents. Calumet has thrived in the beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula for more than 50 years, bringing economic growth to the region. Calumet is attracting national attention for its commitment to talent and community, despite being just 11 miles from Michigan Technological University. The HUBZone credential means that the organization can keep its vision while also reaffirming its mission to defend American electronics from offshoring in the U.S.
