To significantly reduce air pollution, governments must implement a wide range of policies, such as regulating all polluting industries, such as energy production, transportation, and agriculture.
The major sectors contributing to global greenhouse gas emissions can help governments understand how to deal with the problem.
Emissions from power plants: It is necessary to phase out fossil fuels to reduce emissions. Implementing this strategy is challenging, and the report stated that fossil fuel development has no place in the race to reach net-zero emissions. Transitioning to other energy sources, such as nuclear and renewables, is a lengthy and complex process that requires global coordination and collaboration. Some countries are slowly making the transition, but others have no intention of phasing out fossil fuels anytime soon.
Decarbonize the global transport sector: Approximately one-fifth of the world's carbon dioxide emissions come from transportation. Transport demand will increase over the next 30 years, resulting in significant growth.
Electric vehicles (EVs) are one of the most important technologies for decarbonizing the transport sector. Over the past few years, this industry has made significant progress, and battery costs have decreased by 90 percent. Although electric vehicles are a much better alternative to fossil fuel vehicles because they generate much higher emissions over their lifetime, electrification has a dark side. More resource extraction is required to make EV batteries, which has substantial negative environmental and community consequences. The electric vehicle industry is transforming into a much more sustainable business by improving the efficiency of batteries, researching a method of making them from other materials, and recycling old batteries.
Agriculture: Agri-food systems are responsible for 31 percent of human-caused GHG emissions, according to recent data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Preventing air pollution requires addressing the exploitation of resources like land and water and promoting sustainable agriculture. Excessive fertilizer use contributes to soil depletion. One of the easiest ways to reduce farms' impact on air pollution is to switch to nitrate-based solutions.
