Natural Draft Cooling Systems
This approach is well-liked because it uses a natural cooling system that uses direct contact with fresh air to cool the hot water from the system. These systems have the requirement that the system which contains them should be quite large. Given that there must be a difference in density between the hot air at the top and the air outside of the cooling tower, this is the only way the system can function. Power stations or natural gas plants are the most common industries using cooling systems of this type. The shape of the system is such that it naturally draws a draft into the tower, avoiding the need for a mechanical fan system with a propeller and motor.
Mechanical Draft Cooling Systems
These systems are industrial cooling water systems that cool the hot water by using an evaporation process. Hot water from the condenser or other equipment is sprayed on horizontal slats or corrugated PVC fill-packs. Later, these water droplets are then blended with the ambient temperature to transfer heat to the dry air. These processes are carried out via power-driven fans, which categorise this cooling system as mechanical. These mechanical draft cooling systems are found in various shapes and sizes in major industrial complexes. Smaller variants of this system are observed in the form of rooftop units. The materials of construction, durability, and ease of maintenance are the significant factors that are taken into account while considering mechanical industrial cooling systems. To prevent stopping the production line within the facility, these industrial cooling systems are required to have a 100 per cent capacity to function.
Packaged vs Field Erection Types
Packaged towers, one of the most common types of industrial cooling systems, are pre-designed, constructed completely in a factory, and carried to the target location. These systems are unlike field-erection types, which are transported in parts and assembled at the location. Packaged towers are simpler and quicker to install than field-erected types, which are costly and time-consuming. Moreover, they can be modular for future expansion. Applications of packaged tower systems include using small to medium-sized facilities like basic manufacturing processes, hospitals, or HVAC buildings. On the other hand, large industrial cooling systems used in heavy industry and massive plants are often built on-site. They are erected on the spot, which is why they are called field erection types but they are expensive.
