FREMONT, CA: Many companies have recently reported a wide variety of mobility systems' usage to advance the automation of the manufacturing process or the industrial robots used to automate production lines. The International Federation of Robotics states that the pandemic has dynamically accelerated the use of robotics beyond established practices. It is important to understand that automation companies do not come from the desire to replace human workers but rather are powered by the scarcity of sufficient human workers to staff the production lines.

According to studies, over 2.1 million manufacturing jobs will go unfilled this decade at a potential cost of one trillion USD. This is the reason for many associations to emerge recently where labour shortages throughout manufacturing, logistics, and virtually every industry, and companies increasingly shift to robotics and automation to remain productive and competitive.
This kind of change presents both operational and legal challenges. Small and medium-sized manufacturers' capital expense to deploy industrial robots is the primary concern. However, forward-thinking suppliers are embracing machine-as-a-service. In such a model, the engineering, installation, maintenance, and support costs of an industrial robot are primarily introduced by the vendor, and the manufacturer pays a recurring fee for robot usage. Suppliers using this business approach can track their assets and benefits using blockchain technology and collect payment via smart contracts that are assisted by blockchain data.
Legal challenges include areas such as data privacy and intellectual property that some manufacturers need to pay more attention to. As industrial robots are connected to the local area and wide area networks, manufacturers making industrial robots use and automation need to ensure that they have used a proper care standard when protecting access to their networks and to data their systems may store. Additionally, they should plan what to do during a data breach. In the initial stages, industrial robots seem unlikely to store personally identifiable information, triggering a data breach reporting situation because mass product personalisation continues to increase massively.
Curbing legal challenges requires manufacturers to think differently about their intellectual property and how to protect it. Integrating industrial robots into a manufacturing line demands changes to the process that are extremely new to warrant and make desirable patent protection. The operational settings and characteristics should also allow industrial robots to efficiently produce products that reveal new trade secrets for a manufacturer. Protecting these novel trade ideas will require changes to site visit rules, modification or augmentation of staff employment contracts, or even renovation of the physical buildings housing the automated product lines to safeguard against new trade secret disclosure.
