The HydroFORM scanner streamlines phased array (PA) scanning by leveraging the ScanDeck module and integrated index axis encoder.
FREMONT, CA: A phased array (PA) has been widely used in pipelines and process piping to inspect corrosion for the past decade. The advantages of phased array inspection include high-resolution data, high-quality imaging, and excellent coverage. Since analyzing results is relatively easy, inspectors often experience increased productivity.

Next-generation HydroFORM scanners are easy to deploy and optimized for one-person operation, built on the field-proven design of their predecessors. With the integrated index axis encoder and the ScanDeck module, the improved HydroFORM scanner makes phased array (PA) scanning easier and more efficient. The improved water column and bubble management can also handle a wider range of inspection applications.
With an OmniScan X3 flaw detector, the ScanDeck module provides important feedback and remote capabilities that minimize operator interaction. In the operator's eye-line, status lights indicate which encoder is active (index axis or scan axis), when the index position has been reached, whether coupling has been achieved, and if the scan speed has been exceeded. Using the OmniScan unit, the HydroFORM operator can also remotely start the data acquisition process, reducing time-consuming tasks and improving the quality and accuracy of the PA data.
Integrated index axis encoders on the HydroFORM scanner allow raster scanning, providing an integrated corrosion mapping solution without an auxiliary scanner. With smooth indexing magnetic wheels and improved bubble management, the HydroFORM scanner can scan vertically and inverted, such as tank wall corrosion monitoring. The HydroFORM water column system has also been updated to ensure the reliability of the PA signals. Gasket protectors are now included to prolong the life of foam gaskets that conform to the surface and maintain coupling, to enhance wear and temperature resistance.
Solo inspectors can efficiently scan flat parts and pipes up to 4 inches with the improved HydroFORM scanner. As a highly versatile manual scanner, it is also a guided 2-axis encoding scanner that can be mounted on semiautomated or automated auxiliary scanners to handle complex, large-area, and remote inspections.
