Rubber Vulcanization
Today, almost every rubber product is vulcanised. During vulcanization, small amounts of sulphur or another cross-linking agent are heated with rubber so the polymer chains become stabilised. Vulcanization occurs with double-bonded polymer chains, such as natural rubber and polybutadiene. Once the rubber has been vulcanised, it is stronger, more heat resistant, and more elastic. Companies test various vulcanization properties to ensure rubber performs at or above its desired level. For example, few tests determine the vulcanization properties of compounded rubber materials. Testing these characteristics helps them meet quality control standards and supports research and development for products.
Compound Analysis
During compound analysis, a material is examined for the presence and quantity of elements and compounds. The isotopic composition can be studied during this process. There are tests designed for this which determine the polymer type present in a compound. As material properties like elasticity can change during vulcanization and other processing steps, knowledge of a compound’s polymer type is an important approach. This information informs end-use applications and competitive benchmarking.
Polymerisation
Polymerization forms rubber polymers when similar or different monomers chemically combine to form a large chain or network molecule. The process is different from other methods in which molecules form, such as crystallisation, as polymerization requires the formation of stable covalent chemical bonds between monomers.
These larger molecules and polymers should be made of at least one hundred monomers before they acquire unique attributes such as elasticity or high tensile strength. Rubber technology relies on the creation of polymers, as the rubber has bouncy elasticity and strength. Testing these qualities in a certified, trustworthy lab assures distributors and end consumers that the rubber product aligns with industry standards, and performs as promised. To test for elasticity, many companies conduct testing solutions to predict the point where a material sample will tear or tensile or elongation testing to determine how far the material can stretch. The tests must be directly related to the aimed end use of the product for accurate results.
The Preparation of Silicones
Silicones are the most useful polymers for weatherproofing and waterproofing. They help in making waterproof papers, wood, wool, and other textiles. Furthermore, they can be incorporated into the paint to create waterproof paints for outdoor applications, such as porches and exterior walls. Silicone technology brings antifoaming agents into industrial processes, mould-releasing agents, silicone adhesives, and electrical condensers.
