A contentious proponent of embracing automation is the idea that it will take away jobs from workers, leading to substantial unemployment. However, this notion isn’t necessarily true.
FREMONT, CA; According to the World Robotics 2021 Industrial Robots report by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), the US ranked third globally for the induction of industrial robots in 2020, with 39,000 units installed. The same report also revealed the US ranked sixth for robot density, with 255 robots per 1,000 workers.

The US’s labor shortage is well documented, and the farming industry delivers a precise example of the challenges of inadequate staffing. The number of farms has been steadily declining since 2007, from 2.2 million to 2 million in 2020. Contrariwise, the number of temporary agricultural visas awarded by the federal government has quadrupled since 2007, highlighting the increasing struggle of labor shortage.
Collaborative robots, also called cobots, are already delivering solutions, with one instance being automated fruit pickers. These machines utilize computer vision to identify ripe fruits and then pick them using gippers, suction cups, or sawblades. Only a handful of skilled farmers would require to observe the functions of these cobots, solving labor shortages and improving yield. A contentious proponent of embracing automation is the idea that it will take away jobs from workers, leading to substantial unemployment. However, this notion isn’t necessarily true.

The electronics industry renders a stark representation where robotics has not led to disastrous redundancies. The industry is the biggest employer globally with nearly 17 million individuals currently employed in 2022. Electronics is also the largest industry for installations of industrial robots.
The deployment of industrial robots in electronics manufacturing is essential for duplicated precision for coating and circuit boards, assembling connectors, and handling components. Although, the human element of the industry is equally crucial. Engineers are vital for data analysis design, software development, and supervision. While robots may take some menial jobs, this frees up employees to engage in more fulfilling and resourceful positions.
