Importance of power electronics: It can be basically defined as the branch of electronics that is used to study the process of power conversion, conditioning and control in electronic devices. They are used to modify the factors of production affecting the transmission process, such as the voltage, current, frequency and power factor.

History of power electronics: Power electronics was invented during the early years of 1900 as it was initially used in the mercury arc rectifier soon, followed by the use in triodes, controlled grid high vacuum tube rectifiers, metal tank rectifiers and in ignitrons. Major power semiconductor devices introduced and used currently are the bipolar junction transistor, metal–oxide–field effect transistor and insulated gate bipolar junction transistors.
Applications: Semiconductor devices find their application in major electronic devices and are an essential part of their work. Triacs are used as an initial switch to the system and are used for activating phase control among the components. Silicone-controlled rectifiers are employed in having relay controls, time delay circuits, regulated power supplies, static switches, motor controls and choppers. Gate turn-off switches or GTOs can be used in the development of multi vibrators, counters, pulse generators and voltage regulators. IGBT or insulated gate bipolar junction transistor is used in running the motor drives, ups, switched power supplies, traction motor controls, induction heating and inverters.
