In a world where customers have infinite choices, it is imperative for brands to stand out from the crowd. While there may be numerous players in the market that offer the same product or service, it is worth noting when a firm has been able to maintain a leading position, and consistently provide high-quality solutions that meet the unique demands of customers. French multinational manufacturing firm Saint-Gobain is one such maven. Since its inception in 1665, Saint-Gobain has come a long way from being a mirror manufacturer to expanding its business to offer a variety of construction products, building distribution, and high-performance, innovative materials.

"Our ultimate goal is to enable our clients to create their perfect surface"

Today, via different brands, Saint-Gobain designs and supplies products and services that enhance people’s well-being and improve daily life. Saint-Gobain Surface Conditioning–part of Saint-Gobain ceramics–works in partnership with its customers to co-develop innovative solutions for fast material removal and an optimal surface finish. By combining their formulation knowledge and material science expertise, Saint-Gobain Surface Conditioning transforms raw materials into engineered particles, compounds, and slurries that optimize surface conditioning processes in technically demanding applications. Lin Fu, Director of Business Development and Product Development at Saint-Gobain, says, “With a focus on applications ranging from automotive polishing and hard crystal substrate polishing to chemical mechanical planarization and industrial finishing, our ultimate goal is to enable our clients to create their perfect surface.”

Saint-Gobain Surface Conditioning engineers a wide range of particles including diamond, CBN, alumina, and zirconia as tailored solutions based on customers’ unique performance requirements. Using these platforms, the business manufactures a wide range of diamond, alumina, zirconia and nano-abrasive slurries that offer the best combination of removal speed and surface finish in lapping and polishing applications.

We will continue to engage with customers to formulate innovative solutions tailored to their unique needs

Saint-Gobain Surface Conditioning’s abrasive slurries, which are water-based, oil-based alcohol-based, and emulsion-based formulations, deliver consistent and reproducible performance with the highest cutting rate and smooth surface roughness.

When it comes to Saint-Gobain’s specialty chemicals, there is a range of biodegradable coolants, cleaners, lubricants, and specialty fluids that improve machining efficiency and performance in a variety of applications. “Our proprietary manufacturing processes ensure the highest level of quality and consistency through precise control of critical parameters, including size and distribution (PSD), shape/aspect ratio, coating thickness, and surface coverage,” informs Lin.

What perhaps sets Saint-Gobain Surface Conditioning apart is their brand loyalty, product quality, and unique customer-centric approach. “We are vertically integrated, and that allows us to control the quality of our offerings better, select the most advanced abrasives for different applications as well as be more efficient with the supply chain management aspect,” states Lin.

Innovation is at the heart of Saint-Gobain Surface Conditioning’s strategy; the firm’s R&D focuses both on breakthrough innovations and on continuously improving its products, processes, and services in a spirit of openness and attentiveness to customer needs. In a recent instance, Saint-Gobain Surface Conditioning helped a client that was trying to automate their legacy manufacturing processes. One of the products used in the manufacturing process was a homebrew formulation whose consistency was subpar, and hence, the client couldn’t use it for the automation line. Saint-Gobain Surface Conditioning worked in collaboration with the client to create an alternative product that met the cost targets, was more consistent and led to better performance.

“We have over 150 products that help us to address every need of our clients. Of course if there is any niche problem or new challenges that may arise, we will continue to engage with customers to formulate innovative solutions tailored to their unique needs,” mentions Lin.

Saint-Gobain Surface Conditioning is also expanding its geographical footprint across Asia and Europe. No matter what new needs emerge, Lin believes Saint-Gobain will be able to meet the demands head-on with its unparalleled commitment and innovative offerings.

Saint-Gobain Receives 2023 Better Project Award From U.S. Department of Energy for Smart Energy Management System at Its Buchanan, New York Gypsum Wallboard Plant

BUCHANAN - Saint-Gobain, through its building products subsidiary CertainTeed Gypsum Inc., yesterday received the 2023 Better Project Award from the U.S. Department of Energy for the company’s smart energy management system at its Buchanan, New York gypsum facility.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Project awards recognize manufacturers who improve energy efficiency and competitiveness in the industrial sector. To be considered for an award, projects must deliver significant waste or energy savings and must be discreet, innovative, and replicable in similar industrial facilities.

In operation for over 50 years, CertainTeed’s plant in Buchanan is the only gypsum wallboard manufacturing facility in New York State. The system, which was designed in-house and consists of over 180 energy meters, allows the Buchanan team to track and contextualize energy data, forecast future energy use, and tackle actual losses once identified. Within the first three months of installation, the system helped identify several opportunities to reduce energy usage and enabled the plant team to scope process changes and projects to address them.

The project comes as Saint-Gobain continues to implement its global Grow and Impact strategy, which includes ambitious environmental sustainability goals, such as reducing the company’s consumption of energy at its manufacturing sites, allowing Saint-Gobain to achieve a net zero carbon footprint by 2050. With the installation of this first system in Buchanan, the company plans to deploy similar technology at sites throughout North America.

“In a dynamic, continuous production facility like our Buchanan plant, it is essential to have real-time, in-depth data that can help us reduce our energy consumption, and our smart energy management system does just that,” said Jay Bachmann, Vice President and General Manager of CertainTeed’s Interior Product Group. “We are honored to be recognized by the Department of Energy for this work and I want to thank our entire Buchanan team for all their efforts to make this system a reality. As we continue to work towards our purpose of making the world a better home, we will always look for innovative ways to minimize our environmental footprint, while maximizing our positive impact.”

Today’s announcement follows several other recent actions taken by the Buchanan facility to solidify its commitment towards sustainability. In November, the plant was awarded an Excellence in Energy Award by NRG Energy for its commitment to energy efficiency, including the installation of energy-efficient grinding control technology, which reduced the plant’s energy consumption by nearly 700,000 kWh per year. Earlier in 2022, CertainTeed Buchanan, in collaboration with three New York partner companies, launched a circular economy initiative to reclaim waste gypsum wallboard and reuse it as feedstock in production.

With over 145 manufacturing locations in the United States, every current and future member of the company’s team plays a vital role in achieving its sustainability goals. A current list of job openings at all Saint-Gobain locations, including the Buchanan facility, can be found on the company’s careers website.
