From humble beginnings to an industry leader, SJE has grown over the years to cater to a gamut of clients, encompassing installation contractors, municipalities, OEMs, and industrial users. Its journey started in 1975 with Stephen P. Johnston manufacturing the Tank Alert® alarm systems in a garage. Nearly 50 years later, it continues to produce this product and much more.
Focused on growth, SJE now offers industrial control solutions to customers from diverse verticals, like aggregate and asphalt, food and beverages, robotics, HVAC, precast concrete, car wash, adhesives, and metal stamping equipment.
As an OEM contract manufacturer, SJE offers custom engineering control solutions built to individual specifications. It manages the sourcing of components and raw material inventory and advises clients on obsolete components. The team works with clients to secure and source alternative options for parts with long lead times. Project managers keep their finger on the pulse of the customers’ requests ensuring the delivery is aligned with expectations.
SJE operates multiple UL-listed facilities in the U.S. and has the capability to share manufacturing across facilities with higher capacity or one closer to the customer. This flexibility ensures it can fulfill customers’ needs requiring a single control panel while also having the capacity to work on high-volume projects with over 100 control panels in a short time frame.
This capability was recently demonstrated for one of SJE’s customers, a large warehouse automation OEM that required multiple control panels for a nationwide project. The customer asked the SJE team to help build prototypes to be presented during trials. The prototypes were tested, and the contract was awarded to the client. Following this, it continued building additional panels on a large scale, which are now retrofitted into a number of distribution centers across the country.![]()
